Big thanks to Doncaster Chamber of Commerce who invited me to speak at a Ladies’ Lunch event towards the end of last year.
I wasn’t sure quite what to expect, but the audience was really welcoming – and unbelievably diverse and impressive. I met some fascinating women from a really wide range of business sectors – there was even someone from a wildlife park!
During my speaker slot I shared my experiences in business with the audience, giving them an insight into how best to navigate those tricky first meetings with people – especially at networking events.
Here's a few tips that you will help you cretae a knock out first impression:
- Be confident and aware of who you are as an individual –and whatever happens, stay true to yourself and your values
- Never forget the importance of first impressions (did you realise that people size you up in about four seconds flat, and form their initial opinion within twenty?!)
- Practise delivering the perfect handshake (nice smile; full attention to the recipient; firm grip; beware jangling jewellery, ladies!).
I truly believe we should all celebrate our uniqueness and maximise our own abilities; it’s all about having the right mindset. You’ll be amazed at how altering your perspective can make a huge difference to the outcome you are working towards. And start with an end in mind – focus on a definite outcome that you’d like to achieve and you’re so much more likely to get somewhere!
I got some lovely feedback on the day and several people went out of their way to tell me that they’d found my talk motivational and inspiring. For me, that’s what makes it all worthwhile - hope you’ve found something useful here, too.
